“Lash Out” by Alice Merton

For whatever reason, I’m not usually a fan of most female singers I listen to. I just generally like it when guys sing more, or maybe it’s just the kind of music they gravitate towards, but this chick rocks! I’ve listened to her whole album, Mint, and it’s solid all the way around. I dig her more so upbeat songs more (like her big hit “No Roots”), but her slower ones are good as well.

Check her out!

“Let’s Go Crazy” by Prince

So I have to be honest… I heard Incubus’ cover of this song first, and I actually had no idea it was by Prince in the first place.  I never listened to much Prince growing up just because my parents or sisters never really played him, but I’m glad his music is as timeless as he is and was. I love the build-up of the gospel sounds at the start and then the guitars and later drums come parading in. Such a feel-good song.

“She’s Kerosene” by The Interrupters

You may have heard this gem on the radio recently. The Interrupters bring back that ska-punk that we’ve so dearly missed. You also might be surprised to see that their lead singer is a woman, the oh-so talented Aimee Allen. I love the raunchiness and slight rasp to her voice — it’s not often you hear a woman sing this low! But if you listen to her solo stuff, it seems she can sing pretty much anything… amazing.

Also, fun fact — did you know she sang “Cooties” in the 2007 movie Hairspray?

“Sedona” by Houndmouth

Hey Little Hollywood
You’re gone but you’re not forgotten…
You got the cash but your credit’s no good
You flipped the script, and shot the plot
I remember I remember when your neon used to burn so bright and pink
A Saturday night kind of pink

“My Type” by Saint Motel

A wonderful upbeat song by Saint Motel that has recently gained a run with popularity.

Bum bada badabah dah….

Best line: “You’re just my type. You got a pulse and you are breathing.”

If you like this, then check out “Benny Goodman” and “Puzzle Pieces”

Cheers.
